NOTES

The venerable GALAXY class spaceframe entered service in 2358. While versatile and design for a long life, it is, by all acounts, near the end of its design life. As such, plans have begun to find a replacement for the SOLAR-class command battlecruisers. The natural place to look for a successor were the newer battlecruiser class spaceframes, AGAMEMNON and CIRCE.

AGAMEMNON is a large vessel with heavy redundancy and extensive science and exploration facilities. CIRCE is a warship which has much higher levels of automation than had previously been accepted in Federation ships of the line. Her much heavier emphasis on remotes and computerized redundancy, rather than having human backup, resulted in a much smaller vessel which mantained combat parity with her larger cousin. The ARIZONA represents a compromise between the two extremes in battlecruiser design represented by the AGAMEMNON and CIRCE-class battlecruisers. The ARIZONA attempts to better fit the needs of today's varied combat environments when blending into the design the latest in technology.

The design had to be flexible enough to handle full scale battle situations, search and rescue commands, patrol duty, large scale planetary emergencies, science missions, and even diplomatic tasks. Keeping all of this in mind, the ARIZONA-class was conceived. While only slightly smaller than AGAMEMNON, ARIZONA is much less massive than the SOLAR-class command battle cruiser and therefore correspondingly more maneuverable at sublight speeds.

As expected, this class vessel is heavily armed with the latest in phasers and torpedo launchers as well as a fully modern point defense system.

The ARIZONA was the first ship to have an alternative firing mode for some of the main phaser arrays. By using a new lense crystal formulation and adjusting the wavelength of the driving laser, it is possible to create a charge particle beam which disables electronic equipment (ie weapons arrays, engines, sensor pallet) in the region of the target vessel struck without significant structural damage. This mode of fire is not effective against a vessel with shields in place as the beam is more easily scattered by the shields than a normal phaser bolt.

Like the AGAMEMNON, the ship contains reconfigurable internal bays within which allows installation of mission specific hardware, storage of equipment, temporary quarters. However, ease of reconfiguration has been substantially improved from her elder cousin. This feature enhances the multimission aspects of the design.

The first of the ARIZONA II-class ships, both new builds and refits, were introduced at the end of 2414.
