Historical Notes

COVENTRY is the representation of a new push by the Federation to work
under the premise of smaller can be more. Originally designed as a
replacement for the AKRIA/MONTU-class light cruisers, the COVENTRY was
returned to the design phase twice once Starfleet planners opted to
retain the present light cruiser design and plan for a series of
refits to bring that light cruiser planform up to date. The COVENTRY
was redesigned as an augmentation to the AKRIA/MONTU-class but it was
later decided that the new planform should be a based on a destroyer
platform, even though little was done to adjust the planform
dimensions. Given the AKRIA/MONTU-class design and its success, the
scaled down planform was approved with one major departure: the
lengthening of the secondary hull to a more traditional design seen
in the SOVENRIEGN-class heavy cruiser or in the earlier INTERPID-class
frigates. Designers, however, discovered in simulations that the
vessel would be “tail heavy" and would place a large amount of hull
stress on the pontoon support strongpoints on the saucer section and
at the primary/secondary hull junction point. Designers and engineers
finally fell upon the addition of smaller secondary pylons, angled
inboard and anchored near the traditional strongback points on other
Federation starships. It also allowed for the builders to move forward
with the larger impulse engine type they had first envisioned for the
new destroyer. The final design encompassed the speed and agility of a
destroyer class with the hull mass and armament similar to a rather
small light cruiser. Later designs and refits would see the COVENTRY-
class being better suited for multi-role duties: addition of a MMP for
scientific roles, a version that incorporated a larger number of torpedo
launchers for a torpedo boat" variant, and a current refit of the
design for an escort carrier variant, the KRONSHDTAT-class CVE. To date,
one KRONSHDTAT-class hull has been put into service.

The COVENTRY is meant to fill a niche that has long been under represented
in Starfleet. Starfleet has usually assigned a smaller light cruiser class
or a frigate class to cover the role of a destroyer. This was accomplished
either by simply informing the commander of said vessel that he was part
of a escort or a screen or was to report to the nearest starbase for re-fit
and re-supply. COVENTRY represents the first design to slide down the ways
as a true destroyer, which is a vessel designed to cover the roles of a
destroyer class. Sporting a pair of large impulse engines, an enhanced
navigational array and guidance system, and enhanced inertial compensators,
the vessel portrays the destroyer in a sleek and swift response role.
Armed with type X phasers and flux-torpedoes, she has more than enough
teeth to perform her primary duty: Fleet escort and screening missions.
Given the adaptability and mass of the vessel (a small light cruiser),
the COVENTRY-class hull has been envisioned as a medium range explorer,
a missile boat or DDG, and even a stealth version for covert recon based
missions.

It is hoped that the COVENTRY will augment the aging HOOD-class and
outdated MIRANDA-class light cruisers in the multi-mission role as well as
eventually replace the FEYMAN-class destroyer in the classic role of destroyer.
