TACFLEET Notes

The Deltham (Falcon) Class Light Cruiser is the direct descendant of the Bird-of-Prey (BOP) design that the Romulans shared with the Klingons in the early 2300's. While the Klingons were content with upgrading the internal systems, the Romulans have made vast improvements in the structure of the design as well. The Deltham is significantly larger than the old BOP while maintaining a very similar form. The Deltham is much better armed, owing to her 2 plasma torpedo launchers.

Romulan ships enclose a smaller volume than their Federation counterparts, and the Deltham-Class is no exception. The primary reason for this lies in the basic differences at the heart of the power source for Federation and Romulan ships. The quantum singularity used by the Romulans requires significantly less physical space than the Federation M/A reaction chamber, storage tanks, and injectors. The quantum singularity is also somewhat harder to control, and is more likely to fail catastrophically if it is damaged in combat. For this reason, main engineering is located at the heart of a Romulan ship within an armored cocoon.

One very interesting feature of this ship is the location of the bridge. It is set back from the bow about 75 meters along the upper spine of the ship. This was done to allow more room for weapons at the bow. The Deltham has port and starboard bow mounted plasma torpedo launchers. Two phaser banks located high along the centerline of the bow. A pulse phaser mounted in a turret on the underside of the bow. The low elevation of this turret gives it a wide firing arc, including targets aft of the ship. The forward photon torpedo tubes are located about 20 meters above the chin arrar on the centerline of the bow.

Intelligence reports have indicated that some of the newer members of this class use the XrL-4 phaser rather than the older XrL-3. Both systems have similar power output, however the newer array is somewhat more efficient. The increase in efficiency results in less burden on the ship's power distribution grid. Some reports speculte that these ships are armed with 3 bow mounted XrL-4 phaser banks due to more efficient use of internal volume.
