B. Background Summary
---------------------
Jack Veld is a man of great passion, opinion and intellect.  He is a Thinking
Man: an avid reader, quick to debate philosophy and literature.  He despises
warfare, and seeks to avoid it at nearly any cost.  As such, he is an accomplished
diplomat, which was a large reason why he was given command of CONSTELLATION.

His childhood, unlike many of his colleagues, was relatively normal, if one accepts
being raised by his grandparents as normal; with his father in Starfleet, his mother 
lived with hispaternal grandparents first in Richmond, then in Alexandria.  He was
always an intelligent child, and he enjoyed a lot of success in school, eventually
graduating from high school a year early and gaining Early Entry into Starfleet
Academy.

The first real traumatic moment of his life did not occur until he was already
serving in the fleet: his older brother, Billy, was killed during the Klingon
raid of Altair VI in 2245.  However, this event did little to derail his career.

Despite his distaste of combat, he **is** quite a capable warrior: he was something
of a tactical genius at the Academy (he would end up making Tactics his professional
major), and has acquitted himself well when faced with combat during his career,
earning several awards and medals.  Most notably, he earned the Karagite order of
Tactics for his defense of the Andorian colony planet of Tashnal from superior 
Klingon forces in 2251. In this engagement, Jack assumed command of the destroyer
KURSK when Captain Gav (an andorian) was injured in the intial Klingon volleys.
Using KURSK's superior maneuverability, he inflicted large enough losses on the
Klingon squadron that they were forced to withdraw.  Jack then turned his efforts
to directing the damage control efforts, eventually stabilizing a badly-damaged KURSK
until relief could arrive.  Due tot his event, Veld is recognized as a Hero of the 
Andorian People by the Andorian government.  As such, he wears a thin blue ribbon 
underneath his Starfleet insignia in recognition of his standing.  This event 
confirmed his place on the short list for starship command.

The other watershed moment in his career occured during his time in command of the
small cruiser HAWKING.  HAWKING was dispatched to the Pollux system, in order to
mediate a dispute between two applicants for Federation membership, now emboiled in
a war over the precious deposits of dilithium in the asteroid belt between the
planets.  Veld was able to get the two sides to sit down and, despite their 
xenophobia and greed, managed to bring peace to the system while fairly dividing the
profits of the asteroid belt between them.  Shortly thereafter, Veld was promoted and
given command of CONSTELLATION.

Jack is not an addictive personality; however, he is not one to turn down a drink.  In
fact, Jack keeps a very-well-hidden stash of alcohol- Andorian Bourbon, Scotch (single
malt only), even a couple of dusty bottles of Romulan Ale, though he rarely EVER takes 
those out given hoe difficult it is to get those.  He does NOT keep a operational still
on board...though he was busted for that once in his younger days.

VII. Psychological Profile
==========================
Calling him a 'reluctant warrior' would be an understatement; this man loathes
combat, and will try to avoid it if at all possible.  While this might be
somewhat naive of someone commanding one of Starfleet's most modern ships,
he comes by it honestly: he has seen combat up close and personal, and has seen 
what its cost is in terms of humanity.  He simply refuses to pay that price if 
he can help it.

Otherwise, Jack Veld is as well-adjusted as you would want in an officer: keen
mind, compassionate, tough, and fair.
