TACFLEET Notes

The Tholian Opal-Class Frigate is one of the newer designs to come out of Tholian space. Occasionally seen patrolling the border of Tholian space or rarely outside, the Opal-Class was originally mistaken for a Destroyer due to its relatively high cruise speed (for Tholian craft, that is).

However, analysis of Subspace Telemetry, completed in 2411, indicated that the Opal-Class is actually a long-range surveillance vessel. Precisely how powerful its sensors (particularly its long-range sensors) are is unknown but given the generally superior nature of Tholian sensors, it is expected that they will exceed the performance of any other Alpha Quadrant mobile sensor.

Marginally faster than most other Tholian designs, possibly due to its relatively low mass, there have been a number of attempts by various parties to 'ambush' the ship in order to gain access to its sensors but to date, all such attempts have failed. The Opal-Class simply saw them coming and either withdrew or else the approaching vessels found that there was a Sapphire-Class Heavy Cruiser (with its usual accompanying two Emerald-Class Light Cruisers) either present or nearby.

Its hull appears to be two acute triangles meeting at right angles. Unlike most Federation designs, there is no sensor pod to mar its smooth lines. Exactly how the Tholians are able to do this is yet another mystery.
