Operations Departmental Organization
Updated SD 191201

Description

The operations manager (OPS/2O) is the senior member of the shipboard operations group which consists of three departments: operations, combat systems (tactical), and navigation/astrogation. In this capacity, the operations manager also allocates ship's resources and coordinates interdepartmental projects, including those which involve engineering or sciences. OPS also has a permanent place in the senior officer watch rotation.

Departmental Divisions

The operations department (as distinct from the operations group) is composed of six divisions. All division officers may take operations watches, though the ship services officer (SSO) is often excused from such duties owing to the scope of his normal commitments. These divisions are discussed below:

Ship Services (SSO)

The ships services (SSO) division is responsible for the mundane tasks that keep a starship operating and the crew in good health and spirits. With the assistance of the engineering staff (primarily E-division), ship's services ensures the operation of replicators, holodecks, etc. The ship's services division also assigns quarters, stewards, and deals with housekeeping. Moreover, with the assistance of the counselor, ships services makes certain that recreational and education programs go off as planned, and assists the protocol officer in seeing to the comfort of dignataries. This officer is typically a Lieutenant, Junior Grade (O-2), and often doubles as the department XO.

Computer Core (CORE)

The computer core officer is responsible for maintaining the ship's computer computer core. In these duties, the computer core supervisor is assisted by a number of operations specialists. This officer is typically an Ensign (O-1), but may be a chief or senior chief petty officer (E-7/8).

Sensors (SENS)

The sensors division officer is responsible for ensuring the proper calibration and operation of all the ship's sensor systems (navigational, long range, short range). In general, sensor software is maintained by the operations department. The G- and E-divisions in engineering handle the hardware side, while this operations division handles the operation and fine tuning of them. This officer is typically an Ensign (O-1) or an experienced non-commissioned officer.

Communications (COMM)

The communications officer is responsible for ensuring the proper function of ship's communications equipment, especially the software (such as the universal translator) side. Because this billet benefits more from experience than education, the communications officer is often a petty officer or chief petty officer (E-5-7).

Cryptography & Intelligence (CRYPTO)

The crypto department works closely with both the communications divisions officer and the combat information center (CIC) officer to process and direct intelligence to the appropriate parties. This division officer is typically an Ensign (O-1), but may also be a warrant officer (W1-W2).

Department Biofiles

  • NOTE: All NPC biofiles in this packet are in the form of general descriptions. Detailed information is reserved for PC's only.
  • All OPS characters were created and are played primarily by Scott Lusby.

LTJG Morgan Palomar, Department XO

  • This character is a non-protected NPC.
-LTJG Palomar is a short, stocky officer whose career to date has
not been noteworthy, though no outstanding black marks appear on
his record. His fitness and efficiency reports all seem to say
simlar things about him: Palomar is a shrp officer with a real
ability to think 'outside the box'...but tends to coast through
his duties.

As a certified Junior Watch Officer, Palomar will occupy OPS on the
bridge during ALPHA (0800-1200 hours) shift.

SHCS Ramsey Tiron, Ship's Services DivO

  • This character is a non-protected NPC.
-Senior Chief Ship's Serviceman Tiron is the archetypal 'man who
can get things'; he is an organizations genius, and has contacts
seemingly everywhere. He will **not** smuggle any dangerous or
addictive substance on his ship...but he has been known to
miraculously find just the right alcoholic beverage for special
occassions, regardless of its controlled nature. These views are
undoubtedly the result of 20+ years of service in Star Fleet.

Tiron's record, however, is 'spotty' at best in his early career.
However, as of late, he seems to have changed his ways and has
walked the straight and narrow in recent years.

Tiron does not occupy a bridge watch.

ENS Pazlar Radue, Computer Core DivO

  • This character is a non-protected NPC.
-ENS Radue is fresh out of Star Fleet Academy, and his naivity
shows at times. However, SCHS Tiron has taken him under his wing,
so to speak, and the effect, behavior-wise, has been noticeably
positive in that Radue is more assertive and confident in himself.

Radue spends most of his off-time in the gym, working out with
Tiron or perhaps one of the Marine compliment on board.

Radue occupies the FOXTROT (0400-0800) bridge watch.

ENS Droxine Varani, Sensors DivO

  • This character is a non-protected NPC.
-ENS Varani is on her second assignment out of Star Fleet Academy.
The fitness reports on her FIRST tour were not positive, and her
reassignment to a division officer instead of being placed in charge
of a department is a reflection of how BuPERS views her service thus
far. This fact has not been lost on Droxine, and she has developed
a cynicism and a bittenrness towards her senior officers as a result.

That said, Varani, as one of the more experienced Operations officers,
holds the CHARLIE (1600-2000) and ECHO (0000-0400) shift bridge
watches.

ENS Jake Starling, Communications DivO

  • This character is a non-protected NPC.
-ENS Starling is nearly the polar opposite of ENS Varani: he is
motivated, optimistic, and smart as hell. His career, despite the
fact that this is also HIS first tour out of the Academy, has shown
early indications of being on the 'fast track.' Thus far, his
pattern has been a simple one: he does his job, he does it in an
exceptional manner, and he provides a good role model for other
young officers.

Starline holds the BRAVO (1200-1600) and DELTA (2000-2400) watches
on the bridge.

CTIC Nilrem Danar, Crypto DivO

  • This character is a non-protected NPC.
-Cryptographic Technician Chief Danar is, to put it bluntly, a bad
man. His service jacket is filled with so many black marks, he has
been busted down from Chief Petty Officer to Petty Officer, 1st
class no less than a half-dozen times. It is somewhat of a surprise
that Star Fleet even let him re-enlist...but Danar is currently on
one of his 'upswings' in good behavior, which generally coincide
with re-enlistment time, and so...

However, following his re-enlistment, Danar tends to go on a bit of
a spree...which would spell trouble for the department and the ship
in general, and most specifically the Bosun.

It is important to note here that Danar is not simply a guy who
breaks rules. He breaks bones. Danar enjoys a good fight, but
never, EVER against even competition- he is the classic bully, and
will attempt to physically intimdate anyone and everyone who he
perceives as being 'weaker.' As Danar is frankly a HUGE man, this
happens with alaerming frequency. However, Danar is smart enough
NOT to assault an officer- he keeps his reign of terror confined
to the non-coms and enlisted personnel of the ship.

Danar, quite obviously, does not occupy a bridge watch.
