Charlotte is a sixth-generation Star Fleet officer but the first ever of her family to join the marines. Traditionally scientists and explorers her parents still have trouble adjusting to their daughter joining the marines rather the scientific community.

She had long time rivalry going back to Prep school with Miranda Sharpe, also from a traditional military family, which seems to have been resolved in a 'food fight' their third year. After that they became fast friends
