Copyright Guidelines for Entries into the UFPESCO Database

Information on the fictional cultures and civilizations in
the Star Trek universe is affected by United States
copyright law, its Fair Use clause, and the possibilities
of plagiarism, more so than any other kind of material
used by ASR players. However, easy access to such
information would be of invaluable assistance to us
players, and would enable us to avoid duplicating the
creative but timeconsuming work of research into any
particular culture or civilization.

Therefore, the UFP Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UFPESCO) has provided these guidelines for
the use of writers who would like to submit entries for
the listing of Federation and non-Federation Cultures,
Civilizations, and Other Groups.

The submission form includes a section which will ask
the person submitting the entry to specify the copyright
category to which the entry belongs. The entry will be
returned if this part of the form is not complete, due
to concerns with copyright law.

------------------------------------------------------------------

There are four different categories of entries into
this database based on its copyright status:

- Canonical Civilizations
- Semi-Canonical Civilizations
- Non-Canonical Civilizations
- Original Civilizations

-----
Canon
-----
Appeared, featured, or in any way referred to in one or more
episode(s) and/or motion picture(s) of Star Trek and its
various live-action television and film incarnations. This
information is copyrighted by Paramount Pictures, and *must*
be so noted in any entry, whether the actual entry is based
wholly or only in part on said copyrighted material.

----------
Semi-canon
----------

Appeared, featured, or in any way referred to in media other
than live-action television or film, including but not
limited to novels, comic books, unofficial guides or
encyclopedias of or for the Star Trek universe. Parts of
this information is copyrighted by Paramount Pictures; the
remainder is copyrighted by various other entities who have
obtained permission to use said copyrighted material. As
such, these also must be noted in any entry, whether the
actual entry is based wholly or only in part on said
copyrighted material.

---------
Non-canon
---------

Appeared, featured, or in any way referred to in any
copyrighted material pertaining to a non-Star Trek
universe (i.e., Known Space, Star Wars, Foundation, etc.).
As they are copyrighted, they must be noted in any entry,
whether the actual entry is based wholly or only in part
on said copyrighted material.

--------
Original
--------

Civlizations which have never been mentioned in any
incarnation of any copyrighted material in any media.
No part of the entry may be based on copyrighted material.

Please note that in filling out the UFPESCO Cultures
and Civilizations Submission Form, you are acknowledging
that you have read these copyright guidelines, understand
them, and accept them. Please remember that the ultimate
responsibility for compliance with any applicable
copyright laws of the United States lies with the author
of the submission, and neither ASR, UFPESCO, nor the
administrators of either may be held liable for copyright
infringement of any kind.

I accept these copyright guidelines and I am ready to submit my entry into
                               the database.
