Wyrmdrives and Artificial Wormhole Generation

To understand the principle of a wyrmdrive, one must have an understanding of the structure of space and time. When traveling at impulse, which is 3 dimensional travel in 4 dimensional space, one runs into a time dilation effect. The faster you moves, the slower time flows for you. This means that every 1 second of your life could be upwards of 10 seconds or higher for everyone else at high speeds.

Warp drive bypasses this by using dilithium crystals, which have a 4 dimensional lattice structure. The end result is a ship moving 4 dimensions in 4D space. Time travels the same for observer and traveler. One must be careful though, because as was proven several times, one CAN travel through time using a warp drive.

Transwarp was an attempt to surpass the speeds that warp could reach. To do so meant going a step up, 4 dimensional travel in 5D space. Here, the traveler would seem to move instantaneously, but to the traveler, it took time! A reverse time dilation takes effect.. the slower one goes in transwarp, the faster time flows for you. 10 seconds of your time can mean only 1 second for everyone else! Horror stories abound of ships entering transwarp, and exiting as derelict corpse ships. The Borg have been known to create stable stations in transwarp conduits, or hypercubes in that 5D space.

The wyrmdrive is to transwarp as warp drive is to impulse. Using this, one can travel instantaneously for both traveler and observer. This causes other problems. Not only could one accidentally travel through time, and with very little effort, one could travel through universes. It is also limited by a inverse proportion to the size you can send vs the distance sent, basedon energy availiable. This means for a certain amount of energy, you can send a large object a short distance, or a short object a long distance.

The longer one is inside the wyrmhole, the greater the chance of getting off track from the destination.

Currently, the only wyrmdrive in the Alpha Quadrant is on the USS MACRONIN's captains Yacht, the Heart of Gold. The ship has such a low power output, it is limited to a 2 sector jump, before taking a week to recharge. It does mean however, its chances of getting displaced in the universe are very slim.

The wyrmdrive works by sending identical dense matter streams into a rubicatium, a ruby like crystal with a 5 dimensional crystal lattice. Inside the crystal, the energy stream can vibrate in 5 dimensions. At the other end, the streams are combined. at this point, to keep the law that "no identical particle may occupy the same space at the same speed" intact, the matter stream MUST continue to vibrate in 5 dimensions, causing a temporary tear in the fabric of space/time. The size of the tear is dependant on the intensity, while the distance is determined by wavelength. At the other end of the wyrmhole, the energy stream stops vibrating in 5 dimensions and is forced back to normal space, creating a temporary passage.
