Notes:

The SOVEREIGN class starship was first launched in 2372 as an alternative to the popular GALAXY-class variations of the time. The class first proved itself during an invasion attempt by the Borg in efforts to assimilate Earth in 2373, when the USS ENTERPRISE-E was successful in holding off the BORG cube allowing the Federation fleet to regroup. The cube was ultimately destroyed securing a place with Starfleet for the SOVEREIGN class starship.

The KIROV class is the first major modification of the SOVEREIGN class vessels. While few visible alterations are evident when comparing the external design and structure of the two classes, (The KIROV being slightly bigger), there are a number of internal changes.

Based on advancements in sensor technology gained in the development of the AUGUR system (still found only in the TSYKLON class), the systems of the old SOVEREIGN have been upgraded in a successful attempt to provide increased range and improved resolution. In addition, the computer, shield and weapon systems of the aging SOVEREIGN were refit to reflect the current standard for heavy cruisers in active service.

The Mark II KIROV incorporates the newer Type XI extended-range phaser systems, making the KIROV batter able to disable targets at a distance.

The Mark III KIROV adds gravitic planing sublight drive systems.

The Mark IV design included redesigned to the secondary hull to increase the defensive drone capacity to match later heavy cruiser designs. Using further enhancements to sensor and computer core technology, a substantial redesign and refit of the computer core system has allowed for the incorporation of the new Oracle II sensor suite.

This class is by far not the most fierce of the Heavy Cruisers; but with a standard and maximum cruise of 7.0 and 9.4 respectively, the KIROV class is the fastest heavy cruiser in active service. She is among the largest of the cruiser designs still in service. This gives her a longer range and broader multi-mission capability than some of the newer designs.

Naming convention: The KIROV class names are based on those given to Russian naval vessels. A few suggested are:
